In the first story of the briefing today, we discuss a criminal caught in the act. Let’s face it, anyone who has drives gets frustrated with things on the road all the time. Whether it’s someone who cuts you off, a badly placed zebra crossing, or bus lanes that stop you getting where you want to go. Most of us will face these things and sigh, tut, shake our heads and move on with our day with only a slight resentment at the decisions of whoever wronged us on the road.
Well, a 21-year old in Birmingham seems to have taken his frustration a little further than the rest of us might. His particular frustration was with a newly installed bus lane in his city – a lane that is inaccessible to private cars. This was installed to try and reduce pollution near the city centre, as only busses, bikes and taxis are allowed to use it. Many residents have complained that the new lane makes it more difficult to access the hospital and city centre.
It is clear that the 21 year old in question shared these grievances, and decided that he would take matters into his own hands to rectify the problem. Specifically, he tried to use white paint to paint over the new bus lane in an attempt to revert it back to how it was.
Unfortunately for him, he was caught in the act by police officers. His hands were covered in white paint, which has led to the police officers claiming they caught him “white handed” on social media. Despite such posts, many in the area are actually siding with the criminal as they too are frustrated with the bus lane.
He is currently in police custody for criminal damage.
We’re now going to discuss something we don’t normally talk about: YouTube news. Don’t worry, we’re not going to discuss anything like the drama surrounding the Sidemen or anything – we’re keeping this on brand. We’re going to discuss the TalkRadio ban. For those of you who don’t know, TalkRadio is (you guessed it) a radio station in the UK. They regularly feature guests who have contrarian opinions – including throughout the pandemic, anti-lockdown guests.
YouTube has taken a firm stance on videos propagating coronavirus myths – which likely put TalkRadio in dangerous territory on YouTube. Yesterday, YouTube terminated the channel. They didn’t explain why, but to many within TalkRadio, the ban seemed to be clearly about such anti-lockdown content.
As TalkRadio operates on national radio, they are bound by the regulatory body Ofcom. They deal with complaints and ensure that what is broadcast is suitable, and they have the power to fine offenders. This should ensure that anything that is then uploaded to YouTube is suitable too – although YouTube does have different community guidelines.
Today, YouTube actually reversed the ban, claiming it was a “short suspension”. Potentially, this was a mistake made by YouTube, or perhaps the public pressure and news coverage of the ban forced their hand – specifically because a cabinet minister (Michael Gove) actually backed the channel publicly after the news broke.
But, whatever the reason is, TalkRadio is still on YouTube.
Sturgeon Bans Trump
For the final story in today’s daily briefing, we discuss a story about both Scotland and the US. This is the news that the outgoing president may try to visit his Turnberry golf club in Scotland while Joe Biden is being inaugurated. This was revealed as the airport nearby, Preswick, was informed that they should expect a US military Boeing 747 to arrive on the 19th January.
It seems fairly clear then who would likely be on that plane. In fact, it seemed so clear that the Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon commented on the rumours. Specifically, she said:
“I have no idea what Donald Trump’s travel plans are, you’ll be glad to know. I hope and expect that – as everybody expects, not everybody necessarily will hope – that the travel plan immediately that he has is to exit the White House. But beyond that I don’t know. We are not allowing people to come into Scotland without an essential purpose right now and that would apply to him, just as it applies to anybody else. Coming to play golf is not what I would consider to be an essential purpose.”
It seems like Nicola Sturgeon could be going head-to-head with a former president before the month is out! 2021 is already seeming as crazy as 2020.
